How long will my house sale take?

How long it will take from your offer being accepted until you complete the sale will depend on a number of factors. The average process takes between 6-10 weeks. It can be quicker or slower, depending on the parties in the chain.

Stages of the process

The precise stages involved in the sale of a residential property vary according to the circumstances. However, below we have suggested some key stages. These include:

  • Take your instructions
  • Check whether there is an existing mortgage and contact the lender for a redemption statement
  • Draft sale contract and compile title pack
  • Reply to the enquiries of the purchaser’s solicitor
  • Send final contract to you for signature
  • Agree completion date
  • Exchange contracts and notify you that this has happened
  • Complete sale  and arrange to pay the estate agents their commission
  • Arrange for all monies needed to redeem the existing lender and transfer the balance to you or a related purchase
